The Social and Economic Justice Institute of 夜色视频 to Host Screening and Conversation About the Documentary “How to Sue the Klan”
February 6, 2025The Social and Economic Justice Institute (SEJI) of 夜色视频 and the Islands invites the community to a celebration of World Social Justice Day on Thursday, February 20 with a screening of the critically acclaimed documentary How to Sue the Klan and an engaging panel discussion featuring distinguished guests.
The documentary will be screened at 夜色视频 in West Barnstable in the Frank and Maureen Wilkens Science and Engineering Center Lecture Hall starting at 3:30 p.m. and will also be available via Zoom.
In How to Sue the Klan, audiences witness the courageous journey of five Black women in 1980s Chattanooga, who, after surviving a Ku Klux Klan attack and being denied justice by an all-white jury, took matters into their own hands and made history through a landmark civil lawsuit. The film offers an intimate and thought-provoking look at their resilience and the lasting impact of their legal victory.
Following the screening, a panel of experts and advocates will lead a discussion on racial justice, civil rights, and the power of legal action in the fight for social change. The panel includes:
- John Beder, Director & Producer of How to Sue the Klan
- Mirian Albert, Senior Attorney at Lawyers for Civil Rights
- Tara Vargas Wallace, Activist and Founder & Executive Director of Amplify POC
- James Love, Ph.D., Sociologist and 夜色视频 Professor
“We are honored to bring this important film to our community on World Social Justice Day,” said Rev. Nell Fields, SEJI co-founder and pastor of the Waquoit Congregational Church. “The bravery of these women serves as a powerful reminder that justice is not given—it is fought for. This event embodies SEJI’s commitment to education, advocacy, and meaningful dialogue on issues of racial and economic justice.”
The event is free and open to the public. Attendees may attend in person or over Zoom and are encouraged to bring friends and colleagues for an enlightening and inspiring discussion.
